As the play opens, we are immersed in a maelstrom of sound, light, patterns and bits of speech - presumably, snatches of memory. Through ingenious use of lighting, video and special effects, the play is an intriguing mashup of storytelling, pedagogy and technology, inviting audiences to learn about and experience some of the confusion - and clarity - of a brain in the process of healing itself.ĭavid Rosely has had a horrendous accident that has left him in a coma, on the verge of death. The one act play explores the nature of thought and the brain’s own “plasticity” - the ability to rewire its neural pathways - via the story of a comatose man who beats the odds to recover. The play runs through April 10 at the Hudson Theatres. Credit goes to performer and co-writer Alex Lyras, who gives a tour de force performance that inhabits and animates the entire dramatis personae. It wins the small-item storage award, though, and its folding rear seats are easy to configure.Plasticity is ostensibly a one-man show, yet with some half a dozen distinctly different characters that emerge, fade and reappear at various points within the show, you would be forgiven for thinking multiple actors were on stage. The Soul is less accommodating of cargo than larger rivals or those with clever packaging. Rear-seat comfort is almost as good as the front seat both rows provide plush cushioning and, in the case of our test car, a cheeky houndstooth fabric with leather accents. The Soul's dashboard features soft-touch plastics with leather-grain detail, a faux-leather cover over the instrument panel, and, in our Exclaim test car, orange accent stitching. Plus, its upright seating position and excellent forward visibility give it the SUV-like driving experience that crossover buyers crave. The Soul's roomy interior is well equipped, handsome, comfortable, and practical. For the latest numbers on current and older vehicles, visit the EPA’s website and select Find & Compare Cars. From laid-back to peppy, there’s a Soul for every type of driver, and all trims benefit from a refined suspension that soaks up bumps easily yet can play on a curvy back road.ĮPA fuel-economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. With 201 horsepower on tap, it’s downright quick, and a heavy-throttle start will easily spin the front wheels. The Exclaim (!) trim, with its turbocharged 1.6-liter four and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic-our preferred powertrain-adds a big dose of fun and helps the Soul outrun its rivals by a wide margin. The Soul Plus isn’t quick, but drivers will feel more confident pulling out into traffic than with the base engine. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder of the mid-range Plus (+) model makes 161 horsepower and comes matched up to a six-speed automatic. The base model's 1.6-liter four-cylinder makes 131 horsepower and can be paired with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The Soul’s three powertrains offer a range of performance, but they’re all nearly equally efficient. The new turbo four is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and this powertrain is offered exclusively on top-spec Exclaim (!) models. The biggest news in the lineup for 2017 is the addition of a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, which offers 201 horsepower and gives the Soul more, uh, soul. Sure, some rivals are better at carrying cargo or pampering their occupants with luxuries, but the Soul offers plenty to love inside its quality cabin and more practicality than you’d get from a run-of-the-mill hatchback. That it comes wrapped in an expressively styled package is the cherry on top. The boxy crossover embodies what small SUV shoppers want most: a handy, spacious, well-made, high-riding trucklet that is efficient and fun to drive. It’s the Kia Soul’s purity of mission that snagged it a 10Best Trucks and SUVs award for 2017.
